Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday ordered the release of 6,000 cusecs of water from the Stanley Reservoir in Mettur in view of the Mahamaham festival at Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district. Water will be released from the reservoir, from January 28 to February 25 to fill the Mahamaham tank. The festival will be held on February 22.
In a statement, the chief minister said, Lakhs of people from across the country will take a holy dip in the tank. I have ordered the release of 6,000 cusecs of water from the Mettur dam to help the Kumbakonam municipality facilitate this. The Mahamaham festival is celebrated every 12 years. Several lakhs of people take a dip in the temple tank, which is believed to be auspicious.
It may be recalled that the shutters of the Stanley Reservoir were closed on Sunday night, four days before the scheduled date of closing, which is January 28.
