As a move to bring a solution to the parking woes of Chennai people, the Chennai corporation has come up with plans to allow street parking for a fee. Along all the 471 bus routes, the government officials will be making demarcation of parking spaces, say officials.
John Lang Lasalle, a private consultant says that they have started studying T.Nagar as their pilot project, but it got stalled because of floods. Currently, a detailed project report is being prepared for the entire city. The system will be firstly implemented in all bus routes in T.Nagar because this locality is chosen under the smart city project, said a senior official of the corporation.
Stating about the way in which this new system will be different from that of existing road parking, he said the new one will be systemic. There is no signage at present and there is also no control over payment. The haphazard parking is being streamlined now. According to the Indian Road Congress rules, parking can be made on arterial roads only on the selective areas that are permitted.
An app for managing street parking is also being devised and all the consultants are brainstorming for the same. People can make use of debit or credit cards for making payments. Considering the interior roads, people need for their own parking spaces. Urban planners say that the government is not prerogative in providing such personal parking spaces.
