Revenue officials in the taluk of Madurantakam in Kancheepuram district have been directed by the Madras High Court to make sure that wetlands are not reclassified as housing plots. The First Bench of Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana made the directive after dismissing a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) by E. Thirugnana Selvam, a resident of Madurantakam.

Mr. Selvam had said, Madurantakam lake (is) the only source of drinking water for the nearby villages and irrigation in about 2,500 acres. While the fact being so, the tahsildar of Madurantakam taluk is issuing patta to wetlands near the lake as residential plots and the Municipal Commissioner is also sanctioning building construction on the reclassified land. He said that such reclassification of land had led to the loss of more than 100 acres if land meant for agriculture. He pled that the Court prevent more such conversions.
