Essentials in short supply as Chennai limps back to normalcy

There has been partial restoration of telecommunications and trains services in Chennai. Although there is still severe water logging, many roads are slowly becoming motor able again.

People from areas such as Kotturpuram, Mudichur and Pallikaranai had taken refuge on higher floors of buildings. They were seen asking for essentials such as milk and water. These have been in short supply for the past few days. Many people have been finding it difficult to withdraw money as very few ATMs worked around the city. Diesel and petrol are also in short supply, but the government has said that the situation will improve in the next few days.

Banks have announced that they will remain open tomorrow, even though it is a Sunday. Southern Railways has said that they will be operating services on the Egmore - Tambaram stretch. Although services are generally operated between Chennai beach and Tambaram, trains are now being operated only between Egmore and Tambaram and that too only on the main line, said officials.
