Trials are being conducted by Southern Railways on the LHB coaches. LHB, or Linke Hofmann Busch, are light weight coaches. The Southern Railways zone has received these coaches and are looking to use them as spares in the regular trains. LHB coaches are lighter in weighted and longer compared to the regular ICF coaches.
A trial was held on the track from Chennai to Arakonam on Monday. Two of the LHB coaches and a power car were run at 110 km/h. Its performance and technical features were noted for further study. The zone has also got an LHB rake but the green signal to use it has not been received.
A railway official said, (We are trying to) find out if the coaches could be used along with ICF-designed coaches on trains... The trial was to find out how the coaches behaved. The next step will be for officials from Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to conduct another trial.
