Prices of vegetables come down

Posted on: 02/Nov/2015 5:27:49 PM
Since more quantities of vegetables have started arriving at Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market, the prices of vegetables have come down substantially.

Over the last few weeks, vegetable including (big) onion, beans, and tomato were sold above Rs. 50/- per kg. Since then, as more quantities of these vegetables from Kerala, Karnataka, and other districts of Tamil Nadu have started arriving at Koyambedu`s wholesale vegetable market, the prices of vegetables have started coming down since Saturday (31st October). The prices are down by about 30%.

Koyambedu Vegetable Market Traders Association consultant Mr. Soundararajan informed that during the months of May & June, 300 tons to 350 tons of vegetables arrived for sales at Koyambedu market. Hence, their prices were kept under control.

Since May & June, due to failure of adequate rains leading to less harvest of vegetables, only 200 tons to 230 tons of vegetables arrived at the wholesale vegetable market during the subsequent months.

This led to a general increase in vegetable prices, especially big onions sold at Rs. 80/- per kg, tomato being sold at Rs. 50/- per kg, and drumstick at Rs. 100/- per kg.

However, the trend has recently changed and currently, 280 tons of vegetables have started arriving at Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market. So, the vegetable prices have come down substantially.

If the north-east monsoon provides a reasonable rainfall, there are bright prospects of better harvest of vegetables leading to further reduction of vegetable prices.
