Aadhaar card scheme is purely voluntary: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed use of Aadhaar cards also for MNREGA, Jan Dhan Yojana, pension and provident fund schemes but at the same time it has also mentioned that Aadhar Card should not be made compulsory. Earlier the apex court permitted the use of the Aadhaar card for only Public Distribution System (PDS) and LPG subsidy.
The move comes after the Centre on Wednesday told the apex court that the use of the Aadhaar card will be voluntary.
The bench headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu said, Aadhaar card scheme is purely voluntary and not mandatory till matter is decided by this court.
