Wearing helmet: No exemption for women, children, elderly

Dismissing a plea by J.S.N. Nimmu Vasanth who sought to implead in the case and further sought a stay on the State G.O. over the helmet issue, Justice N. Kirubakaran declined to make any exemption for women and children from wearing helmet and further insisted that the order be implemented strictly in suburban areas and all districts too.
In a strongly-worded judgment against the petitioner, the judge said that when the court had directed the authorities to implement the law after taking into consideration the loss of precious lives due to non-wearing of helmet, the contentions raised by the petitioner was untenable and liable to be rejected as anti-public.
During the hearing of the case, the DGP had in his compliance report stated that a total of 3,17,438 cases and 1,01,186 cases had been registered against two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets during July and August (up to August 15) respectively.
