Scientists discover factors that lead to successful ageing

Posted on: 11/Aug/2015 9:39:13 AM
Scientists from the Newcastle University`s Institute for Ageing and the Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo have discovered two factors that help people live to a 100 years. The answer: long telemores and low inflammation.

The experts conducted experiments that sought to find out which pathological and biological processes may enable the body to sustain over a 100 years of age. They concluded that inflammation in the body must remain at a minimum. Also, part of the human cells called telemores must be long. Telemores are the parts that affect how the cells age. Chronic inflammation can develop from any disease like diabetes or those that affect the bones and joints of the body.

Simply put, says one of the researchers, centenarians and supercentenarians are different - they age slower. They can ward off diseases for much longer than the general population, he said. Those in the group that were aged 105 and above showed a number of health markers such as blood cell numbers, metabolism,  inflammation and telemore length. These are believed to contribute to successful ageing.
