Smart toilet complexes to be set up by end of next month

The Chennai Corporation will install smart toilets in 348 locations across the city. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of August. The Teynampet zone will have the most number of toilets; whereas Perungudi will have the least number. The Teynampet zone includes places like Royapettah, Mylapore, Alwarpet, Nungambakkam, Thousand Lights and Chetpet. This zone is closely followed by other densely populated areas like Adyar and Royapuram.
According to a Corporation official, �Every complex will have a minimum of three toilets... We find so many people defecating on the tracks near Royapuram railway station... We need Metrowater and TNEB to give water, sewerage and electricity connections for which there isn`t much of coordination now. It is too expensive to provide a small septic tank for every modular toilet. As of now our own (corporation) divisional engineers are connecting lines to the existing sewer system. A team from Swachh Bharath Mission is constantly monitoring work, so there is pressure to finish it at the earliest... They mandate that there be one public facility for every 50 women and one for every 100 men. That isn`t possible but once we finish installing them across the 348 locations, we would meet basic standards.�
