Power cuts in the city increase

Residents in the city are experiencing power cuts from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm. The sweltering heat doesnt help either! Residents feel that TANGEDCO is not doing the maintenance work that they claim to be the reason for the power cuts.

Only in the last few days we read in the newspapers about more substations and transmission systems being taken for maintenance. The temperature during the day is seething and power cuts between 9am and 2pm simply makes it unbearable, said a Mylapore resident. One resident from Kotturpuram says, We experienced power cuts in the dead of night. There was no power when we entered our apartment at 2am after a night shift on Tuesday. It was restored only at 4.30am but it went off again at at 6am.

TNEB officials clarify, We have no other choice but resort to power shutdown in various areas for maintenance. There is no shortage... Unlike previous years, we have enough power generation capacity. We also have wind power being evacuated throughout the day... On July 2, TNEB recorded a consumption of 300 million units in 24 hours. This level of consumption is not possible without power being supplied in the grid... It is to redress these problems (voltage fluctuations and power cuts) that we deploy personnel from head office as well as from other offices to repair the feeder lines and transformers. It takes at least six hours to do the work but we try to finish it earlier.
