As most applicants have been showing interest towards choosing mechanical and electrical and communication engineering (ECE) during counseling for engineering studies this year, the core streams in engineering still remain on top of students� choice. To note, counseling for engineering students kick-started on Wednesday.
355 out of total number of 1256 seats allotted on the first day of counseling was for ECE branch. The second most popular branch was Mechanical engineering which had 313 allotments to it followed by 245 allotments for computer science. On the whole, for mechanical and ECE streams, a total of 41,815 seats are available.
The first day of counseling saw absence of 37.5% candidates. According to reports from the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) secretary, V Rhymend Uthariaraj, there were more than a thousand students belonging to 190 plus cut-off category.
There were 23 engineering toppers in the state. Out of this, 9 of them appeared for engineering counseling 14 were for MBBS, says Uthariaraj. By the third week of July, B.Arch counseling will begin too.
Nearly 150 students were admitted in the first batch, says a counseling official. There were students who opted for biotechnology and computer science. The beginning of counseling saw a mix of varied choices. Students are very clear about what they really need.
It is expected that about 5000 candidates will appear each and every day. On each and every day, eight sessions will take place each of which will see participation from 500 to 700 students. On the morning of Wednesday, 232 candidates all of those who carried highest cut-off were called and 101 seats were allotted to them.
According to one of the candidates Vignesh.M who chose Mechanical Engineering in Anna University, the discipline has wide choice of specialization in master�s program.
