How to help your child with disappointment

Posted on: 02/Jul/2015 9:34:54 AM
Like adults, children go through disappointment too. Whether it may be a bad grade at school, a fight with a friend or being pulled up by a teacher. So what is your role as a parent?

For one, give the child time to process the disappointment. Encourage the release of emotions. Believe it or not, crying is a wonderful healer. Yes, for boys too! Empathise with your child and acknowledge the disappointment.

The next step is to infuse faith back into the child. Tell him or her that he or she is worth more than the situation and that they are strong enough to bounce back and do better. Give examples of their achievements and their hard work in whatever they like doing most and show them how to apply that to the task at hand.

Lastly, make sure that you come back to the disappointment and, together, acknowledge where the child has gone wrong. Point out the mistakes and make him or her accept them, and also accept that they will not make it again. Do not use any kind of force. By now, your support wouldve made them realise their mistake themselves.
