Being overweight or obese can have serious health implications for the affected person. If you are assessed as morbidly obese, you are a candidate for the Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG), a popular staging operation to treat obesity.

Sri Ramachandra University, one of the leading medical schools in the country recently performed a successful Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) Surgery on an Iraqi National.

On this remarkable achievement, Dr.Vishwanath Pai and his Team, who conducted this surgery said, “We are pleased and humbled to achieve this feat in a span of three and half hours. Obesity, in recent times has been considered as a threat to overall well being of an individual giving way to various heart diseases and the Morbid Obesity is a very delicate issue with dangerous impact.”This is the first time in Chennai this surgery was performed on an individual having BMI -67.

The Iraqi National who was weighing 220 kgs prior to this was admitted in SRMC for treatment.  He presented with complaints of not being able to walk more than 10 metres associated with breathlessness and limitation of day to day activities primarily due to his body weight.   He was also a diabetic on regular treatment and had good glycaemic control. He was evaluated by a team of doctors and paramedics and planned for a BARIATRIC procedure.

Post the regular checkups and other investigations, the patient was deemed fit for the procedure and the proposed surgery. He was intubated using fibreoptic guided nasal intubation and a sequential compression device was fastened to his lower limbs as routinely done for such obese individuals said by Dr.Aruna Parameshwari, Anesthesiologist . From being able to walk barely for 10 mts, the patient has come a long way being able to cover a stretch of 200 mts. He has shown significant improvement losing 13 kgs and is now a step ahead towards leading a healthy life.
