There are certain norms and rules that are to be mandatorily followed while constructing a new home. This however varies from one area to the other.

Say for instance, you got half a ground of land for construction which means 1200 sq.ft of area, you will not be able to construct your home in the entire area. Empty area should be left at all four sides and the home must be constructed in the centre. The total area to be left will depend on the location of your place. One-fourth of the land area should be left empty in case of municipal areas. In corporation areas such as Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, etc, near roads of lesser than 30 feet width, the distance between the road and house should be at least 5 feet.

The empty space to be left at the backyard depends on the overall land area of the plot. If the length of the plot is 50 feet or lesser, the empty space required to be left is 5 feet. For plots above 50 feet and lesser than 100 feet area, the empty space should be 10 feet. And for plots of 100 to 150 feet area, the empty space to be left is 150 feet.
