For the very first time, Anna University will allow female candidates for Mine Engineering from this year in Tamil Nadu.

Mine Engineering in Anna University was started in the year 1957. Following this, owing to lack of proper support and financial reasons, the department was shut down in 1969. Later in the year 1987, it was re-opened. The only bachelors degree program in mine engineering in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry is the one in Anna University. In India, this department is present only in lesser than 20 government educational institutions. As per law, women are not supposed to work in underground mines. Also, they are allowed to work in above ground mines only between 6 am and 7 pm. Hence, studies in this department does not fetch enough job opportunities for women. In addition, one of the important aspects of this studies is to get trained in underground mines. On the whole, owing to all these reasons, female candidates were not allowed to study this department of engineering.

However, in the past few years, in states like Andhra Pradesh, women in more numbers are working in above ground mines and in planning departments. Keeping this increase in interest on this department by female candidates, Anna University has made the department of mine engineering open to female candidates this year.
