All the jewellery shops have made arrangements to keep their shops open till the early morning next day to avoid excessive crowding in the shop and to facilitate the customers.

The term Akshaya in Sanskrit language means one that never diminishes! Conventional belief is that this day will bring luck & success.

The occasion is considered to be the best for buying gold, silver, or jewels made from them, precious stones, houses, or plots.

The public are deeply ingrained with the notion that at least a minimum quantity of gold must be bought on the occasion of Akshaya Thrithiyai

This year the period of Akshaya Thrithiyai is between 9.30 PM today (20th April) and 9.00 AM tomorrow (Tuesday, 21st April).

In order to avoid excessive crowding, all jewellery shops in Tamil Nadu & Chennai had opened the facility of registration on 16th April itself. For the customers who have registered in advance, the making charges for the gold jewelleries or coins will be waived. They will be given discounts of Rs. 50/- to Rs. 100/- per gram. The rate for gold will be considered as the price on the date of registration.

Other attractive facilities such as coming to the house of the customers to take them for purchase etc are also on offer!

Lots of people have registered in advance. As huge crowds are expected by the early morning in the jewellery shops in T Nagar, Purasaiwalkam, and other suburban centres, police security has been beefed up. CCTVs for surveillance monitoring have been installed. Traffic changes in these areas have also been planned.

The President of the Gold & Diamond Traders Association, Mr. Jayanthilal, informed that Akshaya Thrithiyai is set to start at 9.30 PM tonight and ends at 9.00 AM tomorrow. 400% increase in sales today is expected. Hence, arrangements have been made to keep the shops open throughout the night.

Public can visit any time to buy gold, silver, or jewelleries. It is impossible to deploy more people in the shops at the last moment. Hence, security has been beefed up in the shops.

During last years Akshaya Thrithiyai, gold was sold at Rs. 2800/- per gram. Still, gold jewelleries of around 2000 kg were sold!

This year, the price of gold is Rs. 2543/- per gram. This is lesser as compared to last year. Hence, more sales can be expected! The increase in sales as compared to last year is expected to be 15% to 20%.
