A resolution was passed by the Chennai Corporation on Thursday that the unused corporation schools will be used as night shelters for homeless people in the city. As per this initiative, the civic body�s Health Department will shortly turn about 12 unused corporation schools into night shelters.
This resolution will set up 42 new night shelters for the homeless in 2014 � 2015 and currently there are 28 night shelters across 15 zones that are are approved in the city. This includes New Washermenpet, Saidapet, Chinmaya Nagar, Chintadripet, Rajaji Salai, Mandaveli, Santhome, Sembium, Teynampet, choolai, Tondairpet and Kannappar Thidal.
NGOs are also expected to help run this night shelter. Moreover, officials said that only 550 of 11,116 homeless are using these shelters. This resolution is also expected to transfer its land at MBTT complex to CMDA which takes responsibility to construct shelter for the homeless.
