Chennai City to get Krishna Water

Posted on: 06/Aug/2014 12:24:35 PM

The eagerly anticipated Krishna water reached Chennai on Tuesday morning, so as to sustain the water supply for Chennaiites.

On 1 August, 2014 the Krishna water has been release from the Kandaleru reservoir, Andhra Pradesh. After voyaging for about 150 km of Kandaleru Poondi canal, it reached Uthukottai at the Tamil Nadu border at around 6 AM. Again, it travelled more for another 25 km and reached the Poondi reservoir by evening, where it will be piled up and circulated to the city.

In this initial phase, water has been received at about 190 cubic feet per second (cusecs). We are waiting for 300 cusecs of water during this week ahead, so as to meet the city’s demand on drinking water. In case, if we are facilitated with 1,200 million cubic feet water (mcft) monthly, that is sufficient to deliver water for more than a month time, said the Water Resources Department official.

Recently, the storage in the city reservoirs bangs a lower level of just 1,800 mcft which is adequate to prolong water supply for only two months. Krishna water was lending its helping hand to steer clear of water shortage in Chennai city.

We would soon initiate the process of transferring water from Poondi reservoir to Chembarambakkam and Red Hills reservoirs to kick off the water supply to the city. As of now, two-third of the water rolls up from Veeranam tank and desalination plants, said Chennai Metrowater officials.
