The second phase of India`s 2027 Census is scheduled to begin on January 25, 2027, and continue until February 28, 2027. The Union Home Ministry has issued an official notification regarding the schedule through the Gazette.

The population census, originally planned for 2021, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The government has allocated ₹12,000 crore for conducting the nationwide exercise in 2027.

- Population enumeration: January 25 to February 28, 2027.

The online portal for self-enumeration will remain open for 15 days, allowing people to submit their details online before the main census exercise begins.

Census to Be Conducted in Tamil Nadu and Other States

The second phase of the census will take place across most states and Union Territories, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

However, the exercise will not be conducted during this period in certain states and regions due to upcoming Assembly elections and geographical conditions.

The following states and regions are excluded from the announced schedule:

- Manipur

- Goa

- Uttar Pradesh

- Punjab

- Uttarakhand

- Himachal Pradesh

- Ladakh

- Jammu and Kashmir

A separate date will be announced for Manipur. Census activities in Uttar Pradesh and other election-bound states have been excluded from the current schedule due to the upcoming Assembly elections.

What Is Self-Enumeration?

Self-enumeration allows people to submit their household details through an online portal before the population enumeration begins. The facility will be available from January 10 to January 24, 2027.

The second phase will then continue with the scheduled population enumeration from January 25 to February 28, followed by a review period in March.

The 2027 Census is an important nationwide exercise to collect updated population and household information after the delay caused by the pandemic.
