The water inflow to Puzhal Lake has been stopped after supply from the Poondi Reservoir was halted, raising concerns over Chennai’s water availability ahead of peak summer.

Puzhal Lake, one of the primary sources of drinking water for Chennai, had been receiving water from Poondi to maintain storage levels. However, officials have now discontinued the inflow.

Current Water Level Status

Total capacity: 3,300 million cubic feet (mcft)
Current storage: 2,652 mcft
Water level: 18.23 ft (against full level of 21.2 ft)

Officials noted that water release from Poondi had been ongoing earlier due to falling storage levels, but has now been discontinued in recent days.

Impact on Water Supply

Despite the stoppage, authorities continue to supply drinking water to Chennai residents. However, experts warn that prolonged dry conditions and rising temperatures could put pressure on reservoir levels in the coming weeks.

Summer Warning

With summer intensifying, Chennai depends heavily on reservoirs like Puzhal, Poondi, and Chembarambakkam. Any reduction in inflow may lead to tight water management measures if storage levels drop further.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure uninterrupted water supply across the city.
