Southern Railway Suspends Parcel Service at Chennai Egmore Amid Diwali Rush
The Southern Railway Chennai Division has announced temporary measures to manage the heavy Diwali travel rush, including the suspension of parcel services at Chennai Egmore railway station for three days - Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (October 18–20).
In a press release issued on Thursday, the division stated that 176 special train services have been operated in the Chennai Division to accommodate festival travelers. Security measures have been strengthened to manage crowds and ensure smooth travel for passengers.
Major railway stations have been equipped with temporary accommodation facilities, chairs, drinking water, and toilets. Additional ticket counters and extra staff have also been deployed to assist passengers during the festive rush.
As part of safety measures, a sniffer dog check was conducted at Chennai Central Railway Station on Thursday to detect flammable items, including firecrackers. The inspection was carried out in person by senior railway officials.
