Rain Alert for 13 Tamil Nadu Districts: Weather Department Issues Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal, increasing the possibility of rainfall in several parts of Tamil Nadu.

The low-pressure area formed around 5.30 am on Sunday under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the northwest and adjoining central-west Bay of Bengal areas, as well as coastal waters from West Bengal to Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh.

Rain Expected in Chennai and Several Districts

Due to a weak low-pressure trough in the lower atmosphere along the Tamil Nadu coast, rain is likely in Chennai and several other districts.

The weather department has forecast heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds in isolated areas of the hilly regions of Coimbatore district and the Nilgiris. Wind speeds could reach 40–50 kmph during thunderstorms.

Moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds is likely at isolated places in other Western Ghats districts, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Salem, Madurai and Tirupattur, as well as Puducherry.

Chennai Weather Forecast

For Chennai and its surrounding areas, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms may occur in some parts of the city during the evening or night.

The maximum temperature in Chennai is likely to remain around 36–37°C, while the minimum temperature could be around 26°C.

The weather department has said there is unlikely to be any significant change in maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal until August 27.

Strong Winds Over Coastal Areas

Strong winds are expected over the Tamil Nadu coastal areas, Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin Sea. Wind speeds could reach 45–55 kmph, with occasional gusts of up to 65 kmph.

Fishermen and coastal residents are advised to follow the latest weather alerts and safety instructions issued by the authorities.
