CMRL Warns Metro Passengers Against Loud Mobile Phone Use; Fine Increased to ₹2,500

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has issued a public advisory urging passengers to follow metro etiquette and avoid causing inconvenience to fellow commuters.

CMRL stated that using mobile phones in speaker mode, engaging in loud conversations, or playing music or videos without headphones inside metro trains and stations is considered a public nuisance under the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002.

Following the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026, the penalty for creating such disturbances has been increased from ₹500 to up to ₹2,500. In addition to the fine, authorized officials may also remove violators from metro premises.

CMRL has appealed to all passengers to use headphones, avoid speaker mode, and keep conversations at a low volume to ensure a comfortable and peaceful travel experience for everyone.
