Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Scheme: Eligibility Rule Relaxed

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a major relaxation in the eligibility rules for the Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Scheme, which provides a one-gram gold ring to babies born in government hospitals across Tamil Nadu.

Under the revised rule, children born to women who are originally from Tamil Nadu but live in another state after marriage will also be eligible for the scheme if the mother returns to Tamil Nadu for delivery and gives birth at a government hospital.

Who Will Benefit From the New Relaxation?

One of the earlier conditions of the scheme stated that the mother who gives birth must be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu.

However, some women from Tamil Nadu move to other states such as Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh after marriage due to work and family-related reasons. Some of them return to Tamil Nadu, where their parents live, for childbirth and deliver their babies at government hospitals.

With the latest relaxation, the children of such women will also be eligible to receive the benefits under the Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Scheme.
