Chennai Dengue Cases Double in September: 1,290 Reported

Dengue cases have increased significantly in Tamil Nadu, with Chennai witnessing a sharp rise in infections during September.

According to the Health Department, 605 dengue cases were reported in Chennai in August, while the number increased to 1,290 in September, more than doubling in a month. Recent state-level reports have also identified Chennai among the districts with a high incidence of dengue cases.

Across Tamil Nadu, around 18,000 dengue cases have been reported so far this year, according to the latest figures cited in the report. The rise in cases has prompted health authorities to intensify mosquito-control and preventive measures.

In Chennai, 72 new dengue cases were reportedly detected in a single day. People experiencing symptoms associated with dengue have been advised to visit a nearby hospital and undergo medical evaluation.

Dengue Symptoms

Common symptoms of dengue include:

- Severe muscle, joint and bone pain

- Severe headache and pain behind the eyes

- Red rashes on the skin appearing a few days after the fever begins

- Loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting

- Bleeding from the nose or gums

- Extreme tiredness or restlessness

Dengue is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which are active mainly during the daytime. People are advised to take precautions such as wearing full-sleeved clothing and using mosquito repellents or lotions.

With dengue cases rising during the monsoon season, eliminating stagnant water and preventing mosquito breeding around homes and workplaces can also help reduce the risk of infection.
