OMR Residents Organise Special Deepavali Crackers Waste Collection Drive for Recycling

Residents` welfare associations along Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) are organising a special Deepavali cracker waste collection drive to ensure that recyclable materials are recovered instead of being mixed with regular household garbage.

Every year, firecracker waste, including plastic, cardboard and metal remains, accumulates outside residential complexes after Deepavali celebrations. When it rains, much of this waste gets washed away, potentially contaminating the soil and surrounding environment.

To address this issue, the Federation of OMR Residential Associations (FOMRRA), along with SIMPLE, has taken the initiative to organise a separate waste collection drive in collaboration with Bisleri`s `Bottles for Change` recycling initiative.

Why Is a Separate Deepavali Waste Collection Drive Needed?

Explaining the reason behind the initiative, Harsha Koda of FOMRRA said that several residential communities approached the organisation last year after finding large quantities of firecracker waste in their driveways and outside their premises.

He pointed out that when rainwater washes away the waste, it can seep into the ground and cause environmental concerns. Therefore, the associations decided to organise a coordinated collection drive rather than leave individual communities to manage the waste on their own.

Two Categories of Firecracker Waste to Be Collected

The Deepavali cracker waste collection drive will focus on two major categories of recyclable materials:

Plastic, Cardboard and Carton Packaging: Packaging materials from firecrackers, including hollow cylindrical packaging from burnt aerial shots.

Metal Waste: Metal remains from burnt sparklers.

Residents have been requested to segregate these materials separately and store them in designated collection areas within their residential communities.

Collection Scheduled for November 10

The collected firecracker waste will be picked up on November 10 and transported to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for further processing and recycling.

Organisers have also created a coordination group to help residents clarify their doubts about the types of waste accepted for collection and the correct segregation procedures.

Residents Encouraged to Participate

The initiative aims to promote responsible waste management and improve recycling practices after Deepavali celebrations.

By separating recyclable firecracker packaging and metal waste from regular garbage, OMR residential communities can help reduce environmental pollution and ensure that recoverable materials reach appropriate recycling facilities.

The special collection drive highlights the importance of community participation in keeping Chennai`s residential neighbourhoods clean a and environmentally responsible after the festive season.
