Tamil Nadu to Introduce MLFF Toll System at Three Toll Plazas Soon

Tamil Nadu is set to introduce Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology at three major toll plazas, allowing vehicles to pass through without stopping at toll booths. The system will initially be implemented at Paranur, Nemili and Sennasamudram toll plazas.

The new system is expected to reduce long queues, waiting time and fuel consumption at toll plazas, particularly during weekends, holidays and festival periods.

MLFF System at Three Toll Plazas

The MLFF system will be introduced at Paranur toll plaza on NH-45 near Chengalpattu, located on the Chennai–Trichy National Highway, and at Nemili and Sennasamudram toll plazas on NH-48, along the Chennai–Bengaluru National Highway.

Under the new system, vehicles will be able to pass through toll points without traditional barriers or toll collection booths.

FASTag and AI Cameras to Enable Automatic Toll Collection

The MLFF technology will use two systems simultaneously to identify vehicles and collect toll charges.

An RFID reader will detect the FASTag installed on a vehicle, while an AI-powered Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera will capture the vehicle registration number.

The two sets of information will be matched to verify the vehicle before the toll amount is automatically deducted from the linked FASTag account. If the FASTag cannot be properly detected, the ANPR system can identify the vehicle using its registration number.

This dual-layer technology is expected to reduce errors in toll collection and minimise potential revenue losses.

Paranur MLFF Work Nearly Complete

Work to install the MLFF system at Paranur toll plaza in Chengalpattu has reportedly been completed. Software integration and testing are expected to be carried out soon before the system becomes operational.

The new technology is expected to provide several benefits, including reduced traffic congestion, shorter waiting times, lower fuel consumption and smoother vehicle movement through toll plazas.

It could also reduce manual intervention in toll collection and help lower vehicle emissions caused by idling traffic.

MLFF to Be Expanded Across Tamil Nadu

Paranur, Nemili and Sennasamudram are among the toll plazas selected for the initial rollout of the new MLFF toll collection system in Tamil Nadu.

According to the information provided, the system is expected to be expanded to all toll plazas across Tamil Nadu within the next six months.
