Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Heavy Rain Expected in Nilgiris and Theni, Chennai May Get Rain Today

Tamil Nadu is expected to receive heavy to moderate rainfall in several districts over the next few days, according to the Chennai Meteorological Centre. A weak trough in the lower levels of the atmosphere over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu is influencing the weather conditions.

On August 13, 2026, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph is likely at one or two places in Nilgiris and Theni districts.

Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Pudukkottai may receive moderate rain with thunderstorms and strong winds. Other parts of Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal, may experience light rain with thunderstorms.

Chennai Weather Today

In Chennai and its suburbs, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy. Some parts of the city may receive light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.

The maximum temperature is likely to remain around 36–37°C, while the minimum temperature may be around 26–27°C.

Tamil Nadu Rain Forecast: August 14 to 18

On August 14, heavy rain is likely at one or two places in Nilgiris and Theni. Moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds may occur in Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur, Namakkal, Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi and Villupuram.

On August 15, moderate rain is likely at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Madurai and Dindigul.

On August 16 and 17, moderate rain may occur in parts of the Western Ghats, Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Chennai and Ranipet, as well as Puducherry.

On August 18, moderate rain is expected at isolated places in the Western Ghats, Dindigul, Madurai, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Chennai.

Temperature Forecast

From August 13 to 16, significant changes in maximum temperature are not expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. However, temperatures may be slightly higher in parts of northern interior Tamil Nadu.

Maximum temperatures in some northern interior districts could remain 2–3°C above normal, while temperatures elsewhere are likely to remain close to normal.

Fishermen Warning

Strong winds are expected over parts of the Tamil Nadu coast and Gulf of Mannar from August 13 to 16. Winds may reach 45&ndndash;55 kmph, occasionally touching 65 kmph.

Similar strong winds are expected over parts of the Southwest Bay of Bengal, Andhra coast, central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea during the forecast period.

Due to the expected rough sea conditions and strong winds, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the warned areas.
