Heavy Rain Alert: Schools and Colleges Closed in Many Districts Today, October 22

The depression that formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and continues to strengthen. According to the Meteorological Department, it is expected to move west-northwestwards and develop into a severe depression off the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh by this afternoon (October 22).

The system is likely to continue moving west-northwestwards and reach the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh by tomorrow (October 23). Further updates on whether it will intensify into a cyclonic storm are expected later today.

In light of the heavy rainfall warning, District Collectors across various regions have declared holidays for educational institutions to ensure the safety of students.

🔹 Holiday for Schools Only

Chennai District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Jagade has announced a holiday for all schools in Chennai district today (October 22) due to heavy rain.

Similarly, schools will remain closed in the Salem, Pudukkottai, Perambalur, Tiruppur and Namakkal districts.

🔹 Holiday for Schools and Colleges

A holiday has also been declared for both schools and colleges in the following districts:

Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Trichy, Pudukkottai, Ranipet, and Sivaganga.

In addition, Puducherry and Karaikal regions have also announced holidays for schools and colleges today.

Authorities have urged residents to stay alert, follow official weather updates, and avoid unnecessary travel during the ongoing heavy rainfall.
