SRM Ramapuram Attempts World Record with 7,000-Metre Textile Braid

SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, has attempted a world record in sustainable fashion by creating a 7,000-metre-long textile braid using pre-loved clothing, with the participation of more than 700 students.

The initiative aims to upcycle approximately 700 kg of discarded clothing, promoting textile reuse, circular fashion and responsible consumption. Students from the Department of Fashion Designing, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Business Studies, collaborated to create the braid.

The completed textile braid will be donated to Goonj, a national NGO, to manufacture reusable products such as bags and mats, giving discarded clothing a new purpose.

The event was attended by representatives from youth organisations, international partnerships and sustainability-focused initiatives. Dr. R. Shivakumar, Chairman of SRM Group of Institutions, Chennai Ramapuram and Trichy, highlighted the importance of education-driven social impact and praised the students` commitment to sustainability.

The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly responsible consumption and production, climate action, sustainable communities and partnerships for sustainable development.
