Intangles Study Flags 75,000+ School Bus Safety Events Across 61 Indian Cities

An Intangles study has identified more than 75,000 flagged driving safety events across 598 school buses in 61 Indian cities during the first half of 2026, highlighting concerns over speeding, harsh acceleration and hard braking.

According to the study, one in five school buses recorded at least one speeding incident, while the figure rose to four in five buses in Delhi. A total of 116 buses repeatedly recorded speeding incidents every two to three days, with an average speed of 79 km/h during flagged instances, against the prescribed 40 km/h limit.

Hard braking accounted for 81.5% of flagged safety events, with each school bus recording an average of 126 events over six months. The study also found that hard braking incidents increased between 7 AM and 8 AM, coinciding with the morning school commute. Maharashtra recorded a sixfold higher share of harsh acceleration events than the national average, with Pune reporting a higher share than Mumbai.

The findings highlight the need for continuous driving behaviour monitoring, driver training and stronger safety measures alongside existing GPS tracking and speed governors to improve school transportation safety.
