Tamil Nadu Government Issues GO for ₹1,200-Crore New Secretariat and Assembly Complex in Mylapore

The Tamil Nadu government has issued a Government Order (GO) for the proposed construction of a new Secretariat and Legislative Assembly complex in Chennai, with an estimated project cost of ₹1,200 crore.

The new Tamil Nadu Secretariat and Assembly complex is planned on 25.55 acres of land in ‘Mylapore town’ and will have a total built-up area of approximately 20 lakh sq ft. However, the Government Order has not specified the exact location of the proposed complex.

25.55 Acres Identified for New Secretariat

According to the Government Order issued by Public Department Secretary E. Sundaravalli, the government has identified land belonging to three departments for the proposed project.

The identified land includes:

Tamil Nadu Housing Board: 22.89 acres

Greater Chennai Corporation: 0.93 acre

Revenue Department: 1.73 acres

The government has proposed to provide in-principle approval for the construction of the new Secretariat and Assembly building complex.

₹1,200-Crore Chennai Secretariat Project

The proposed new Secretariat and Assembly building will have a built-up area of 20 lakh sq ft and is expected to cost around ₹1,200 crore.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has been directed to prepare and submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) along with cost estimates within three months.

The government has also formed three committees to oversee the selection of an architectural firm and finalise the preliminary and final drawings and designs for the proposed complex.

Objections Over Possible Pattinapakkam Location

Earlier reports suggested that the new Secretariat complex could be constructed in Pattinapakkam. A section of fishermen has opposed the proposal, expressing concerns about its potential impact on their livelihood.

The fishermen have stated that their communities have been living in the area since before Madras developed into a town and subsequently became the capital of Tamil Nadu.

Earlier Attempts to Build a New Secretariat

The proposed project is the third major attempt by a Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to establish a new Secretariat and Assembly complex.

Former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had planned to construct a new complex by demolishing the Queen Mary`s College campus, but the proposal was eventually abandoned.

Former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi successfully constructed a new S Secretariat and Assembly building at the Omandurar Government Estate. The building was later converted into the Omandurar Multi Super Speciality Hospital.

With the latest Government Order, the Tamil Nadu government has taken another significant step towards the proposed ₹1,200-crore new Secretariat and Assembly complex in Chennai. Further details on the location, design and construction are expected after the DPR and architectural planning process.
