Chennai Property Tax: GCC Clarifies Revised Assessment Notices

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has clarified that there has been no general increase in property tax across Chennai. The civic body said revised property tax demand notices were issued only to property owners and commercial establishments whose properties were found to have been under-assessed or wrongly assessed.

According to GCC Commissioner Dr. G.S. Sameeran, discrepancies in property areas were identified using GIS mapping, satellite data, government databases and self-declarations submitted by property owners.

The GCC said the assessment exercise was carried out to identify differences between the actual property area and the area recorded for property tax purposes.

Chennai Property Tax Appeal

Property owners who have objections to the revised property tax assessment can file an appeal with the concerned Regional Deputy Commissioner (RDC) within 15 days of receiving the notice.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has stated that the appeals will be examined and disposed of within 30 days.

The civic body has also urged residents not to believe reports claiming that property tax has been increased across Chennai. Officials clarified that the revised demands apply only to properties where discrepancies, under-assessment or incorrect assessments were identified.

The GCC`s clarification comes amid concerns among Chennai residents and commercial property owners over higher property tax demand notices.
