Chennai Weather: Moderate Rain Brings Relief From Heat, More Showers Expected

Residents of Chennai received some relief from the heat as moderate rain accompanied by sudden gusty winds swept across the city and neighbouring areas on Monday evening. Several parts of Chennai experienced showers for the second consecutive day.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) reported that temperatures in Chennai dropped by up to 2 degrees Celsius on Monday. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in several parts of Tamil Nadu until August 16.

The sudden moderate to heavy rainfall caused waterlogging and traffic congestion on several roads, including arterial roads, during the evening peak hours. The weather conditions affected commuters returning home.

Chennai Rain Forecast for August 11

The RMC has forecast light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and lightning in Chennai during the evening and night hours on August 11.

According to the latest forecast, weather activity is expected to continue due to a feeble trough running along and off the Tamil Nadu coast in the lower tropospheric levels.

Moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph is likely at isolated places over the Western Ghats districts, North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Light rain with thunderstorms and lightning is also expected at isolated locations across the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal.

Chennai Rainfall on August 10

According to RMC rainfall data recorded between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM on August 10, Pallikaranai received the highest rainfall in Chennai at 12.7 mm.

Other areas recorded the following rainfall:

Pallikaranai: 12.7 mm
Meenambakkam: 10.2 mm
Taramani: 9.0 mm
Nungambakkam: 5.6 mm

In the suburbs, Poonamallee in Tiruvallur district recorded 11.5 mm of rainfall, while the AGS Medical College area in Kancheepuram recorded 9.0 mm.

Chennai Temperature Drops

Both Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded maximum temperatures of 35°C on Monday.

The temperature at Nungambakkam was 1.5°C below normal, while Meenambakkam recorded a temperature that was 2°C below normal.

The drop in temperature provided some relief from the recent heat conditions in the city.

Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast: August 12 to 16

The RMC has forecast light to moderate rainfall in the Western Ghats districts from August 12 to 16. Light rain is also expected across the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Maximum temperatures are likely to remain 2–3°C above normal in isolated areas of North Interior Tamil Nadu, while temperatures are expected to remain near normal across the rest of the region n through August 14.

Residents in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu are advised to remain alert during thunderstorms and gusty winds, particularly during the evening and night hours.
