Celebrating Rtn. S.N. Balasubramanian: Four Decades of Corporate Experience, a Continuing Commitment to Service

Leadership finds lasting meaning when knowledge and experience help others grow. On the occasion of his birthday, LiveChennai celebrates Rtn. S.N. Balasubramanian, fondly known as SNB, whose work brings together corporate leadership, business mentorship, environmental responsibility and community service.

From senior responsibilities in the automobile industry to trusteeship in charitable healthcare and leadership in Rotary, his public profile reflects a sustained engagement with both institutions and individuals.

A Strong Foundation in Finance and Corporate Leadership

A qualified Chartered Accountant and Company Secretary, Rtn. Balasubramanian also completed the Senior Management Programme at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

According to his official profile published by Sankara Eye Hospital, he has more than four decades of corporate experience at senior levels, predominantly in the automobile sector. He retired as Chief Executive Officer of Automotive Coaches and Components Limited (ACCL), described in his Oak White Partners profile as an associate company of Ashok Leyland Limited.

His career combines a grounding in finance and statutory responsibilities with experience in general management, leadership and strategic planning. These capabilities have also shaped his subsequent work as a mentor and business strategist.

His professional contributions extend to sharing knowledge. Sankara Eye Hospital’s profile records that he has presented papers and delivered lectures at professional bodies including MMA and CII, taking his experience beyond the organisations in which he has worked.

Mentoring Businesses and Emerging Entrepreneurs

SNB’s professional engagement continued beyond his executive career. Oak White Partners lists him among its mentors and describes his work in advising a healthcare organisation, guiding a natural medicine venture and holding board positions in educational institutions.

The same profile records his association as a mentor with Bharatiya Yuva Shakti Trust, connecting his management experience with support for entrepreneurship. These associations reflect a continuing interest in helping organisations and emerging business owners develop their capabilities.

Contributing to Charitable Healthcare

Rtn. Balasubramanian joined the Board of Trustees of Sankara Eye Hospital in January 2020. The hospital’s official website continues to list him as a trustee.

The institution operates its base hospital at Pammal, Chennai, with branches at Nanganallur and Samarjhola in Odisha. Its services include specialist eye care, outreach screening, eye donation awareness and ophthalmic education. His trusteeship places him within an institution whose work connects medical expertise with community needs.

For charitable institutions, the contribution of experienced professionals extends beyond financial knowledge. Governance, planning and organisational continuity help create the conditions in which service can be sustained.

Building Rotary Institutions with a Purpose

SNB’s Rotary journey includes a role in building clubs as well as participating in service projects.

An October 2017 feature in Rotary News identifies him as the charter president of the Rotary Club of Gummidipoondy Industrial City, established in 2007. The report also credits him with being instrumental in chartering the Rotary Club of Chennai Green City.

The Chennai Green City initiative carried a distinctive approach: keeping fellowship simple so that more resources could support community work. The feature described breakfast meetings, vegan food and a decision to direct savings towards service projects.

At its installation programme, the club donated three computers and a printer/scanner to a government high school. The report also recorded the establishment of a Rotaract club, linking the new institution with opportunities for younger people to participate in service.

Together, these efforts illustrate a practical principle: an organisation’s everyday choices can strengthen its capacity to serve.

Environmental Responsibility as a Continuing Interest

Environmental service is another documented part of his public life. His Oak White Partners profile records his involvement with Exnora International, identifies him as President of the Exnora Innovators Club of Anna Nagar at the time of that profile, and notes his leadership responsibilities in environmental management activities within Rotary International District 3232.

His role in establishing Chennai Green City further connects that environmental interest with institution building and community participation.

Vocational Service and Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities

Rotary’s January 2022 district bulletin identifies Rtn. Balasubramanian as Chairman of Vocational Services, District 3232.

It records that he led a joint programme involving Rotary Districts 3232 and 3141 for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, 2021. The programme focused on inclusion through vocational training, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities, while recognising the achievements of persons with disabilities.

This emphasis on earning opportunities also appears in public records of livelihood support. The Tamil Nadu Differently Abled Federation Charitable Trust recorded his participation, as District Chairman for Community Economic Development, in a February 14, 2021 distribution of 15 mobile vending carts to beneficiaries with disabilities.

The trust’s broader Maatrum Thiran initiative, undertaken with Rotary District 3232, combined carts with skills training and follow-up support to help beneficiaries establish small vending businesses. The approach recognised that equipment becomes more useful when accompanied by guidance in running an enterprise.

Encouraging Ethics and Recognising Educators

His vocational service responsibilities also included engagement with professional ethics. The January 2022 district bulletin records his participation in a December 2021 workshop addressing ethics and values for professionals and other participants.

Education and recognition of teachers form another part of his documented community involvement. In September 2021, he presented trophies at the Rotary Club of Madras Chenna Patna’s Best Teacher Awards, which recognised six educators and their contributions during the pandemic.

More recently, Adyar Times reported his participation in a September 2025 Teachers’ Day celebration at Arignar Anna Higher Secondary School, Besant Nagar. Organised by RCC Bluewaves, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chennai Green City, the event honoured all 28 teachers of the school.

Supporting the Mission to End Polio

His public service record also includes a personal fundraising campaign supporting polio eradication through the Rotary District 3232 Charitable Trust. The campaign connected his individual participation with Rotary’s wider commitment to ending polio.

A Birthday Tribute to Experience Put to Work

Across corporate leadership, business mentorship, charitable healthcare, environmental engagement and vocational service, SNB’s contributions share a practical quality: applying experience where it can help people and institutions move forward.

A vending cart can offer a starting point for independent income. A mentor can help an entrepreneur make a better decision. A well-run institution can continue serving its community. These are different forms of contribution, each strengthened by people willing to give their time and knowledge.

On his birthday, LiveChennai celebrates Rtn. S.N. Balasubramanian’s professional journey and his continuing association with community service.

LiveChennai wishes Rtn. S.N. Balasubramanian good health, happiness and a fulfilling year ahead, with many more opportunities to inspire, guide and serve.
