Three-Day Holiday Announced for Schools and Colleges in Virudhunagar and Chengalpattu Districts

Schools, colleges, government offices, and public sector establishments in Virudhunagar and Chengalpattu districts will observe a three-day holiday from August 14 to August 16, 2026, following the declaration of a local holiday for the Aadi Pooram festival.

In Virudhunagar district, District Collector K.V.R. Jeyaseelan has declared Friday, August 14, as a local holiday to mark the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple Car Festival, one of the most significant celebrations associated with Aadi Pooram.

Aadi Pooram commemorates the birth anniversary of Goddess Andal, one of the most revered saints in the Vaishnavite tradition. The annual festival at the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple attracts thousands of devotees from across Tamil Nadu.

Similarly, Chengalpattu District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade has announced a local holiday on August 14 in view of the Aadi Pooram festival at the Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Siddhar Peetam, where large numbers of devotees are expected to participate.

The holiday applies to government offices, educational institutions, government undertakings, and other establishments under the Tamil Nadu Government in the respective districts. However, essential government services, including district and sub-treasury offices, will function with minimum staff to handle urgent administrative work.

The local holiday on August 14 will be followed by India`s Independence Day on August 15 (Saturday) and the weekly Sunday holiday on August 16, giving students, teachers, government employees, and office staff in both districts a continuous three-day break.

Residents have been advised to plan official work accordingly, as government offices and educational institutions will remain closed during the notified holiday period.
