About 15% of restaurants in Tamil Nadu have shut down due to a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, according to the Tamil Nadu Hotel Owners Association. In Chennai alone, around 215 small and medium hotels have closed, while many others are operating with limited menus.

The shortage has also led to black market sales, with a 19-kg commercial cylinder priced at ₹2,043.50 officially now reportedly being sold for ₹6,000–₹6,500. The disruption is linked to reduced LPG supply following the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Many large hotels have shifted to firewood or electric stoves, while smaller eateries have stopped preparing items such as vada, bajji, samosa, and bonda due to the lack of cooking gas.
