Major disruption has been reported in Chennai’s suburban rail network as renovation works continue at Chennai Egmore Railway Station. Due to ongoing infrastructure upgrades, 49 additional suburban train services have been cancelled from today, causing inconvenience to daily commuters.

Platform Renovation Until April 5

Renovation work began on Platforms 10 and 11 at Egmore on the 20th of this month. As a result, suburban train operations have been shifted to Platforms 5 and 6 for a period of 45 days, until April 5.

Suburban Train Services Reduced

According to Southern Railway, the total number of EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) services operated on the Chennai Beach – Chengalpattu route has been reduced from 204 to 164. With the latest announcement, 49 more services have been suspended starting today.

This decision has significantly affected lakhs of daily passengers who rely on Chennai suburban trains for work, education, and other essential travel.

- Signal delays are causing trains to halt intermittently

- Increased travel time across suburban routes

Passengers have raised concerns about delays and operational issues due to signal congestion and platform limitations.

26 Special EMU Trains Announced

To reduce commuter inconvenience, Southern Railway has announced 26 special EMU services from Chennai Egmore to:

- Guduvancheri

- Chengalpattu

These additional trains are expected to partially manage peak-hour rush and ease travel pressure.
