CM Vijay Launches Urban Development Mission to Boost Tamil Nadu Infrastructure

The Tamil Nadu government has announced the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM) to improve the quality of life of people by strengthening urban infrastructure and civic services across the state.

Under the new mission, project reports will be prepared for corporations, municipalities and town panchayats to improve essential services, including safe drinking water supply, underground sewerage systems, solid waste management, roads and transport facilities.

The CMIUDM scheme will also include measures to improve the urban environment and public health. The government has estimated an allocation of ₹25 crore for implementing the mission.

Minister Rajmohan announced the new initiatives on behalf of Chief Minister Vijay during the demands for grants for the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.

₹254 Crore Allocated for Sewerage Projects

Meanwhile, the government has allocated ₹254 crore for ongoing underground sewerage works in Tambaram, Chromepet and Thiruneermalai, as well as for new underground sewerage projects.

The funding is aimed at strengthening sewage infrastructure and improving sanitation and civic services in these rapidly developing urban areas.

Legacy Waste in Avadi, Tambaram and Coimbatore

The government has also planned to remove legacy waste that has accumulated over several years in the Avadi, Tambaram and Coimbatore Corporations.

The waste will be cleared using the biomining method, which involves scientifically processing old waste to recover reusable materials and reduce the amount of waste requiring disposal.

CMWSSB to Commercialise Biogas

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) currently operates 22 sewage treatment plants. The biogas generated from these plants will be upgraded into Compressed Biogas (CBG) and commercialised.

The initiative is expected to support sustainable waste management while creating an additional revenue stream for the government.

The proposed measures under the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission are aimed at strengthening urban infrastructure, improving civic services and enhancing the overall quality of life for people across Tamil Nadu.
