Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to Expand to Classes 6–8 From September 22

The Tamil Nadu government will expand the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to students of Classes 6 to 8 from September 22. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay will inaugurate the expanded scheme at Tiruvanmiyur in Chennai.

Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment K Jagadeeshwari said the expansion would benefit around 15.30 lakh students studying in 15,910 government and government-aided schools across Tamil Nadu.

₹217.63 Crore Allocated for Expansion

The government has allocated ₹217.63 crore for the expansion of the breakfast scheme.

According to a circular issued by Social Welfare Department Secretary M Pallavi Baldev, the scheme will be expanded across all districts except Chengalpattu and Tiruppur. The Model Code of Conduct is currently in force in these two districts due to the by-elections in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies.

District authorities have been instructed to complete all necessary preparations to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted launch of the expanded scheme.

Breakfast Scheme to Cover 447 Schools in Chennai

In Chennai, the expanded scheme will be implemented in 447 schools. The Commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation will oversee its implementation.

In other districts, the respective District Collectors will be responsible for monitoring the implementation of the scheme.

The existing menu, operational guidelines and monitoring system will continue without any changes.

Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme Menu

The breakfast scheme, originally introduced in 2022, currently provides upma, kichadi or pongal on weekdays. On Fridays, students are served rava kesari or semiya kesari.

Locally available millets are also included in the menu at least twice a week. The government spends more than ₹12.71 per child on each breakfast served under the scheme.

The expansion will extend the breakfast programme to students in Classes 6 to 8, increasing its coverage among government and government-aided school students across Tamil Nadu.
