Chennai Weather Today: Light to Moderate Rain Expected as Cyclone Murasu Crosses Andhra Pradesh Coast

Chennai is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Tuesday and Wednesday as severe cyclonic storm Murasu crosses the Andhra Pradesh coast, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).

Cyclone Murasu to Make Landfall Near Ongole

In its bulletin issued at 8.10 pm on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the cyclone was centred over the west-central Bay of Bengal, approximately 70 km east-southeast of Kavali, 80 km east-northeast of Nellore and 200 km north-northeast of Chennai`s Nungambakkam.

The system was moving north-northwestwards at 13 kmph and was expected to cross the coast between Nellore and Narsapur, near Ongole, in the early hours of Tuesday.

Gale-force winds of 70-90 kmph, gusting up to 100 kmph, were reported along and off the South Andhra Pradesh coast. Wind speeds were expected to increase to 100-110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph, during landfall.

Heavy Rainfall Recorded Across Chennai

Chennai experienced significant rainfall on Sunday night. Parry`s Corner and Kadapakkam recorded the highest rainfall in the region at 15 cm each.

Chennai Weather Forecast for Tuesday

The IMD has forecast a maximum temperature of 32°C and a minimum of 24°C in Chennai on Tuesday.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are also expected at isolated locations across parts of North Tamil Nadu, the Western Ghats districts, Puducherry and Karaikal.
