The State Cyber Crime Department has issued a strong warning to the public not to download fake mobile applications that claim to offer free movies and free OTT services. These fraudulent apps are reportedly stealing users’ personal and financial data.

In a statement released yesterday, the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Branch said that unauthorized applications are being circulated through third-party websites, Telegram groups, and social media platforms. When such apps are downloaded, the built-in security features of mobile phones may be disabled, making users vulnerable to cyber threats.

Officials warned that these illegal apps can access and steal personal information such as contacts, photos, and messages stored on users’ devices. Cybercriminals may misuse this stolen data to carry out fraudulent activities including digital arrest scams, fake investment schemes, and fake job offers.

Moreover, if banking and financial information is compromised, users may face serious monetary losses. Authorities emphasized that downloading, sharing, or using unauthorized apps is illegal and may lead to strict legal action under cyber laws.

Advisory Issued to the Public:

- Do not download movie streaming apps from third-party websites, Telegram, or social media platforms.
- Do not enable installation of private or unknown apps in your mobile phone settings.
- Do not disable or alter existing security features on your device.
- Avoid apps that promise free OTT subscriptions, premium access, or free plans without proper registration.
- Do not click on suspicious pop-up advertisements or unreliable links.
- Download OTT applications only from official platforms such as the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
- Downloading, sharing, or using unauthorized apps is a punishable offense under cyber law.

The Cyber Crime Department has urged the public to remain cautious and use only safe and authorized applications to protect their personal and financial information.
