From 1st of July 2025, a scheme to provide ration items to the homes would be launched in about 10 districts including Chennai in Tamil Nadu. In the first phase under this important scheme, ration items would be given to the senior citizens above the age of 70.
Every month, essential items like rice etc are being provided to 2.23 crore ration cardholders across Tamil Nadu. It must be taken into account that card holders could purchase items by visiting the ration shops and registering their fingerprints at point of sale devices.
It is worth mentioning here that those senior citizens who are unable to move could send someone else to buy the ration items on their behalf. These seniors have been forced to depend on others for the sake of ration items.
In this scenario, the TN govt has taken a very important and much needed decision to distribute the ration items directly to the houses of senior citizens and differently able persons etc having ration cards.
On trial basis, this scheme would be launched from 1st to 5th of July in the districts of Chennai, Tirunelveli, Sivagangai, Dindigul, Ranipet, Erode,Nagapattinam, Dharmapuri, Nilgris and Cuddalore etc.
In the first phase, ration items would be distributed to the houses of senior persons who are above the age of 70. To make the necessary arrangements regarding this, yesterday, senior officials from the Cooperative & Food dept, zonal joint registrars and District Distribution Officers etc took part in an online meeting.
It was later brought to light by a senior official from the Food and Cooperative dept that ration items, POS devices and fingerprint devices would be carried in the vans and after the verification of Aadhar, the ration items would be distributed to the senior citizens.
The Food dept would provide details about the number of beneficiaries in each district and the cooperative employees would distribute the ration items accordingly
Information gathered is that from the upcoming Independence Day or from the month of September the ration items would be distributed directly to the homes of senior citizens and differently able persons across TN.
