General counselling for admission to government arts and science colleges across Tamil Nadu for the 2026-27 academic year commenced on Monday.

A total of 1,26,959 seats are available across 181 government arts and science colleges, covering 159 courses. Among these, 1,01,022 seats are offered in Shift I and 25,937 seats in Shift II.

More than 2 lakh students applied online between May 7 and May 29. Admissions are being conducted based on students` Class 12 examination marks.

On the first day of counselling, students who scored above 400 marks were invited for seat allocation.
Counselling for special reservation categories was held on June 5 and 6, while general counselling will continue until June 18.

First-year classes for admitted students will begin on July 1, while second and third-year students will resume classes from June 15.

Officials noted that applications from girls exceeded those from boys this year. They also observed that arts courses remain more popular than science courses, with many students opting for arts subjects as they help in preparing for government competitive examinations alongside higher education.
