GCC Plans to Outsource Maintenance of 95 Sports Facilities in Chennai

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to hand over the maintenance of 95 sports facilities across Chennai to private contractors under a three-year contract. The proposed tender amount for the first year is ₹3.71 crore.

The initiative aims to reduce the Corporation`s maintenance expenditure while ensuring the proper upkeep of public sports facilities. The facilities covered under the proposal include badminton courts, tennis courts, skating rinks and table tennis centres.

95 Sports Facilities Included in the Plan

The proposed tender covers 37 existing sports facilities requiring fresh tenders and 58 newly opened facilities. The Greater Chennai Corporation has classified the facilities into prime and non-prime locations based on public demand and maintenance costs.

The facilities include 51 indoor badminton courts, 19 tennis courts, 23 skating rinks and two table tennis facilities.

Chennai Sports Facility Maintenance Tender Details

The proposed first-year tender amount is ₹3.71 crore. Of this, ₹3.29 crore has been allocated for 71 sports facilities in prime locations, while ₹42.25 lakh is proposed for 24 facilities in non-prime locations.

The contract amount payable by the selected contractors will increase by 5% in each subsequent year. Contractors must also submit a caution deposit equivalent to 25% of their quoted contract amount.

GCC`s Plan to Improve Sports Facility Maintenance

By involving private contractors, the Greater Chennai Corporation aims to establish a structured maintenance system for public sports facilities. The initiative is expected to help manage maintenance costs and ensure that sports venues remain suitable for public use.

The proposed three-year contract will cover facilities used by residents across Chennai for recreational activities and sports training. The effectiveness of the initiative will depend on the maintenance standards followed by the selected contractors.

The proposal marks a step towards improving the management of Chennai`s sports infrastructure while reducing the Corporation`s direct maintenance responsibilities.
