Chennai Metro Reduces Poonamallee - Vadapalani Travel Time to Just 30 Minutes

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has further reduced travel time on the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Phase II Corridor 4, bringing the journey duration down to approximately 30–32 minutes. The improvement is expected to benefit thousands of commuters, particularly during peak traffic hours.

The 14.6-km metro stretch was opened for passenger services in October 2026. Initially, trains took around 37–38 minutes to cover the entire distance. Following a review of train operations and timetable modifications, CMRL has managed to reduce the journey time further.

According to officials, trains were initially operated at an average speed of 32 kmph between Poonamallee and Porur, while the maximum operating speed between Porur and Vadapalani was 40 kmph.

Fewer Stops to Reduce Travel Time

One of the key changes involves reducing the number of intermediate stops. According to the report, trains now halt only at Valasaravakkam and Saligramam on the relevant stretch, helping reduce overall journey time.

The operational changes were also made following discussions with railway safety authorities. Officials said the modifications were necessary to ensure safe train operations while improving commuter convenience.

Relief for Daily Commuters

The reduction in travel time is expected to provide significant relief to people travelling between Poonamallee, Porur and Vadapalani. Commuters who previously depended on road transport often faced delays due to heavy traffic, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.

The Chennai Metro Phase II Corridor 4 is an important addition to the city`s public transportation network. Faster services are expected to encourage more people to choose metro rail over road transport, helping reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity across western Chennai.

With further operational improvements, Chennai Metro is expected to make daily commuting faster and more convenient for residents.
