In a significant step towards improving railway safety, Indian Railways has announced the implementation of the advanced Kavach automatic train protection system on the Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu suburban rail corridor.

The project, undertaken by Southern Railway, will cover around 60 kilometres of one of Chennai’s busiest suburban routes, used daily by thousands of passengers.

Kavach, an indigenously developed safety technology, is designed to prevent train collisions, automatically apply brakes in case of signal violations, and regulate train speeds. This system ensures enhanced communication between trains and signalling infrastructure, significantly reducing the risk of accidents.

As part of the upgrade, Kavach Version 4.0 will be installed along with modern optical fibre communication systems to enable real-time monitoring and improved operational efficiency.

Officials stated that the project is part of a larger initiative covering over 500 route kilometres, aimed at strengthening railway safety infrastructure across key sections in Southern India.

The Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu corridor is a crucial suburban rail link connecting major residential and commercial areas. The introduction of Kavach is expected to provide safer, more reliable, and technologically advanced travel for daily commuters.

In addition to this route, similar safety upgrades are planned for other important rail sections, reinforcing Indian Railways’ commitment to modernisation and passenger safety.
