Cave-in on Perambur High Road: Metro Water Begins Swift Repair Work

Posted on: 14/Jun/2025 9:55:23 AM

A sudden cave-in to a depth of 6.5 feet occurred on Perambur High Road around 11 am on Friday, caused by the collapse of a British-era brick-arch drainage structure due to erosion. The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) promptly cordoned off the area and began urgent repair work.

Officials stated that the century-old drainage system weakened over time, leading to the incident. The CMWSSB is installing a 1,000 mm pipe to channel drainage water and will reinforce the section with concrete and iron structures. Repairs are expected to be completed by Sunday morning, with normal traffic resuming by evening.

Meanwhile, traffic police have diverted vehicles via Madhavaram High Road, Melpatti Ponnappa Street, and BB Road to manage congestion on this key city route.
