Tamil Nadu May Get Stronger Northeast Monsoon After Hottest August

After weeks of scorching heat and humid nights, Tamil Nadu could see some relief later this year, with meteorologists expecting a stronger northeast monsoon.

India recorded its hottest August since 1901, with the mean temperature reaching 28.01°C, which was 0.67°C above the long-period average. The country also received 16% less rainfall than normal during August.

According to scientist V R Durai, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre in Chennai, Tamil Nadu is likely to remain hot and humid during the first half of September, with occasional spells of rain.

He said weather conditions could become more favourable for Tamil Nadu once the northeast monsoon begins. El Niño is expected to remain a major influence on weather patterns in the coming months.

While temperatures could rise further after September 15, Durai said the same weather pattern may also support increased rainfall during the northeast monsoon.

The Northeast Monsoon in Tamil Nadu usually begins in October and continues through December. It is crucial for the State as it helps replenish reservoirs, groundwater and other water sources.

Meteorologists are therefore hopeful that Tamil Nadu could receive good northeast monsoon rainfall this year, providing much-needed relief after the prolonged heat.
